Narcos portrays a romanticized version of Pablo Escobar, establishing him, from the beginning, as a business and family man, instead of a dangerous criminal that must be stopped, which makes it hard for us not to empathize with the Colombian kingpin. Brancato’s previous involvement in shows like Hannibal, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and The Firm give him the experience to portray one of the most prominent criminal figures in modern history, and he does so in such a delicate way, that there are points where it isn’t hard for us to sympathize with one of the most dangerous men in the history of the American continent.

Yet, after we finish viewing each chapter of Escobar’s life, he leaves us wanting more and more, making us vulnerable to the temptation of binge-watching all ten episodes available in one weekend. The rest of the series concentrates on the battle the Colombian government faces in its attempt to regain power, and the involvement of US agencies in the fight against the cartels.Įxecutive producer Chris Brancato gives us the right amount of excitement, violence, and suspense in each episode to satisfy our most morbid pleasures. We watch it for Pablo, the drug lord that built in Colombia his empire of cocaine and terror. But honestly, we don’t watch Narcos for the DEA agent who wants revenge. However, the show is narrated by and spins around Drug Enforcement Agent Steve Murphy, who decided to fly to Colombia and help in the fight against the drug war after one of Escobar’s hitmen killed his partner. The first episode concentrates on the way in which Escobar became involved in the cocaine business, his rise to power, and the motivation of the American government to stop him.

Narcos takes us back to 1980s Colombia, to the kingdom of Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria, one of the most popular, feared, and enigmatic figures of his time. It is so addictive, that it is only fair to compare its impact on us with the effect the substance Escobar smuggled into the US had on its consumers.
